Ports need more actionable strategies for energy transition, with port authorities spearheading the adoption of sustainable technologies through collaboration.
This is the key message of our recent contribution, “Sustainable and Greenhouse-Gas-Neutral Initiatives Within European Ports: Insights from the MAGPIE Project,” authored by MAGPIE partners Michele Acciaro, Caya Hein, Maaike Dalhuisen, and Maarten Flikkema.
The paper, now published online, is part of the proceedings of the 10th TRA Conference: Transport Transitions – Advancing Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility, which focuses on eco-efficient mobility systems. MAGPIE was proud to be part of this important exchange last year in Dublin.
Our contribution highlights our project key lessons. While many ports discuss energy transition, few have transformed their plans into significant actions due to technological, regulatory, and financial challenges. The study of 12 pioneering ports reveals three recurring themes central to encourage actual progress:
- Development of energy transition infrastructure.
- Decarbonization of seagoing vessels and hinterland transport.
- Governance and stakeholder coordination.
