Reyer C. Will, Manager MAGPIE Project, participated in the R&D Session by EDP NEW – Ports of the Future – Contributing to a greener transport sector, on the 14th of September at 5 PM.

The road towards decarbonization has on the transport sector one of its most important streams. Although it currently accounts for a quarter of Europe’s Green House Gas Emissions, the reduction target is set high: 90% decrease by 2050. How can we reach this ambitious goal and what is the role of ports in this transition will be the starting points of our discussion in the next R&D Session by EDP NEW. We’ll get to know two projects which are developing innovative solutions such as a swappable container waterborne battery, which will be the future breakthroughs for making our transport sector sustainable at last.

How about sustainable ports?
The MAGPIE project built a categorisation of ports, based on today’s energy transition efforts and capabilities. These categories assists future work of the MAGPIE Masterplan in developing energy transition pathways for ports. The three main themes identified as critical are: energy transition infrastructure and technologies, seagoing ships and hinterland transport, governance for energy transition. The categorisation was prepared on the basis of a detailed study of 15 sea and inland ports, which are considered pioneers in terms of energy transition and sustainability.
